2004 G2 Riesling/Gewurztraminer

Information Sheet

This wine is a blend of 60% Gewürztraminer and 40% Riesling. Gewürztraminer is offspring of a Traminer, a very old variety (reputed to originate in the town of Tramin in the North of Italy),

which is now quite rare, as it has been replaced by its more aromatic Gewürztraminer.  Gewürztraminer is grown fairly widely in B.C and is well adapted to this northern climate.

The Gewürztraminer grapes for this vintage were harvested on October 4 and 5, 2004 at an average sugar content of 24.8% sugar (technically “late harvest” fruit).  The fruit spent 12 hours on the skins after crushing.  The wine was fully fermented to complete dryness (1 g/l residual sugar) in stainless steel tanks, and then spent about 9 months on the lees.  Acidity at bottling was 6.7 g/l and alcohol content is 12.6%.  200 cases were made into Gewürztraminer the rest was used to blend our G2.

Riesling is also a very old varietal grown in many parts of Austria, Germany, France and Northern Italy. Both, the Gewürztraminer and Riesling have been a Huber family blend for many years at our European winery. This wine is our first release of our B.C. winery.

Riesling (Johanesberg White Riesling)

This crisp and full-bodied white wine was grown in our Estate Vineyards. The grapes were harvested on October 22, 2004, at 22.8% sugar, after a long and intense growing year, lending concentrated, typical Riesling flavours to this wine.

The aroma features citrus, floral and flinty notes, with hints of green apple and lime. The wine is fully fermented, and finished completely dry – this makes it a natural match with a wide variety of foods. Its refreshing but rich mouthfeel will complement many seafood, poultry and pork dishes, especially if the flavours and spicing are bolder. 400 cases have been released under the Deep Creek label the rest has been used to blend our G2

G2, Tasting notes

The wine has aromas suggesting a typical Gewürztraminer, tropical or soft fruit, with hints of nut and lyche.  It is full and quite soft in the mouth, although there is still sufficient acidity in the wine to give it backbone and structure. In the aftertaste you get the nice acidity and round fiinish of the Riesling. The wine is drinking well and can be enjoyed with most food or just simply by itself. It will hold in the cellar till at least the years 2014.  As this variety ages, the Riesling will take over more of the taste as well as beautifully rich nut character develops and the texture becomes more honeyed and oily on the palate.

G2 is an excellent choice with mildly sweet/spicy dishes such as light curries, grilled seafood or poultry, dried fruits or with sweeter vegetables like yams, squash and carrots.  Try it with a creamy ginger/carrot soup or roasted pork tenderloin in a compote style sauce made with tamarind, dried apricots and figs.

This wine is sold only directly at the winery, due to its limited quantity of only 400 cases. It is priced at $17.90 / 750 mL bottle.
