| Afternoon Tea at The Vine-Yard at Hainle Organic Winery

Enjoy a little taste of the great English Afternoon-Tea tradition here in the Okanagan.
The popularity of enjoying tea spread across England and the commonwealth back in the early 1700's and since this time has been enjoyed by all levels of society. The basis of afternoon tea was to entertain and socialize with friends and family and since it became the meal of the day because British people at the time only took breakfast and dinner. Therefore afternoon tea, became the lunch of the day and allowed people to congregate and pass the time of day together.
Afternoon tea really became very popular when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford (1788 - 1861), one of Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting, experienced a sinking feeling in the late afternoon. Adopting the British tea service experience, she invited friends to join her for an additional afternoon meal, at five o'clock, in her guest rooms at Belvoir Castle. The menu centered on small cakes, bread-and-butter sandwiches, assorted sweets and, of course, tea.
Afternoon tea, as we now know it today, was born.
The practice of inviting friends to come for tea in the afternoon was quickly picked up by other social hostesses and, in just a few decades, the custom of taking tea in the afternoon became well established. At first, the practice was limited to the upper classes, but it eventually became so popular that tea-shops and tea-rooms began opening for the enjoyment of the general public.
Today, we invite you to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea experience created with British ingredients and following tradition of over 200 years. |
